Over the holiday break, I loaded up On Writing Well by William Zinsser on my new iPad. The book is at once a book about writing great non-fiction and an exercise in meta-writing. Each chapter employs the exact techniques Zinsser is trying to explain.

While reading about writing, it struck me that the modern non-fiction piece is very similar to the design we produce today. Late last September, Allan hammered out “The Flat Design Era” which—by measures of reputable internet statisticians—blew the fuck up. The Tumblr post as received well over 500 notes and reblogs, its fair share of arm-chair developer-as-designer Hacker News comments, and still continues to be a point of contention among many designers. In the post, Allan encourages simplicity and flatness in design as honesty. Rule #6: Good design is honest. But interface design shares a similarity with non-fiction writing: At its core, it is meant to be the vessel for something else.

Here is another amazing Google Chrome Experiment… This time, the guys from Google’s Data Team, have mashed up a tonne data, info and visuals from NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA) and Wikipedia to literally map the 100,000 stars closes to our very own sun! Which as they note, is just a tiny fraction of the sextillions of stars in the broader universe.

The experiment makes uses WebGL, CSS3D, and Web Audio to deliver a seriously amazing experience.

Air New Zealand has revamped its standard safety video to tie in with the release of the upcoming movie The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which was filmed in New Zealand. ‘An Unexpected Briefing’ features crew members and extras dressed in Middle-earth styles and incorporates many references as well as flight safety information.

The airline partnered with WETA Workshop, who have worked on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film series, for the Hobbit-inspired video. It even features a cameo appearance from the director Peter Jackson. There is also a competition to find and unlock the elvish code in ‘An Unexpected Briefing’ for the chance to win one of six pairs of tickets to the world premiere screening of the new movie on November 28th.

AntiMap Video is a desktop application built in Openframeworks. It synchronises recorded data from the AntiMap Log mobile application with raw video footage (mov, avi, mp4, m4v). It was originally created as a snowboarding/skiing application to visualise real time rider data and stats similar to a video game.

Truly amazed by this app.

AntiMap Log is a smart phone utility application for ‘recording’ your own data. Whether your out snowboarding, skiing, mountain biking, driving, running, or whatever your into, AntiMap Log is a DIY solution for gathering real-time stats with your phone.
